From Learning to Leadership: Why Digital Skills Matter for Young People
Digital skills are becoming an important part of education, employment, communication, and leadership. For young people, learning how to use technology effectively can open opportunities that were not easily accessible before.
Digital literacy begins with simple abilities: finding reliable information, communicating professionally, using digital tools, creating content, and learning through online resources. But it can grow into more advanced skills such as programming, web development, data management, and digital problem-solving.
The value of these skills goes beyond technology itself.
When young people learn how to solve problems independently, manage digital projects, communicate with others, and share what they know, they also develop qualities that are important for leadership.
Teaching is one example. A person who teaches a technical subject must understand the topic well, communicate clearly, listen to learners, manage time, and adapt when students face difficulties. These experiences can develop both technical knowledge and leadership abilities.
The same is true in organizational work. Managing people and responsibilities requires communication, organization, accountability, and the ability to work toward a shared goal. Technology can support these responsibilities by improving communication, documentation, collaboration, and access to information.
For young people in Afghanistan, combining digital skills with education and leadership can create a powerful foundation for the future. It can help them become not only users of technology, but also educators, professionals, problem-solvers, and creators.
I believe that young people do not need to wait until they have perfect circumstances before they begin developing themselves. They can start with the resources available to them, learn step by step, share knowledge with others, and gradually turn learning into action.
Digital skills may begin with learning how to use a computer. But with persistence, they can become tools for education, professional growth, leadership, and creating opportunities for others.
